Amateur Archeology - Return To Stadium Arcadium 5-26-2014 and 5-28-2014

Of course Stadium Arcadium is the "Top Secret" code name of a location not to far from my home here in Taylorsville.  Wouldn't it be boring if I called it Andrew Roy Park?  (Which is also a "Top Secret" code name.  And not all that boring because he is my nephew!)  The old west analogy of "claim jumping" does exist in the urban treasure hunting world.  I have never had a problem with it that I know of, but several of my friends who write, and post videos of their hunts have.

In the old west where a lot of folk carried side-arms, a claim jumper would likely be shot.  In this day and age if I caught someone jumping my claim t I would have to make them a  victim of a drive-by noogie!

Once I find a location, my objective is to clean it out of both treasure and trash and then move on.  ( I recycle all of the trash that I take.  Green is my favorite color after all!)  My urban treasure hunting card would likely read:  Have Metal Detector - Will Travel.

Stadium Arcadium has been very good to me.  I have found a lot of coins along with some very cool items.  According to the records that I have been keeping, I have found 60+ quarters here alone.  Not too shabby...  This article represents my fourth and fifth trip to this area.  There is maybe one more day of hunting here and I am done.

Various Chochskies, Nick Nacks and What Nots - Found at Stadium Arcadium
This week re-introduced an old enemy back into the picture.  Mosquitos.  Of all of God's creations here on this earth these guys rank as my third least favorite.  They are only proceeded by Wood Ticks at #2 and the all time never to be replaced winner Great White Sharks.

The battle began when I entered an area very thick with grass, damp from a recent watering.  Going in I knew the risks.  But the call of unfounded fortune was far too great!

Once in, they came at me from all sides.  I was outnumbered maybe five hundred to one and in the formation they were currently in they left me little chance for escape.  In my haste to get out of the house I forgot to bring my shielding (Avon Skin-So-Soft.  They hate the stuff, plus it leaves my skin silky smooth with a pearl like luster!). I had no choice.  Fight it out or die trying.

Emblazoned across their little winged bodies I could see the motto "No Vein In Vain!"  My motto for that day was "Kill them all and let God sort them out!"

Their initial volleys fell true in my upper and lower extremities.  Two direct hits on the upper and four and 1/2 on the lower.  There was a close call to my fore section, but a quick swipe caused him to spiral out of control.  I turned to watch him explode as he slid headlong into the waving grass!

Within the first four minutes of return fire against my wily adversaries 10 were killed crashing into the abyss.  This caused several waves of the insects to pull off and rethink their actions.  The following brief attacks against me led only to failure.

Final count against me: repairable damage in the form of eight bites across my form in various locations.

Final tally of dead Mosquitos:  23
The mosquito community is in mourning....

My kill score earned me the title of Aerial Ace.  I am sure a Congressional Medal of Honor is not far behind.  The Mosquitos were young, inexperienced, possibly newly hatched.  But with their voracious appetite for my blood I could give them no quarter....

The best find, and also the funnest of the two days, was the Snoopy "Joe Cool" pin.  It is marked as sterling silver and from the looks of it was not cheaply crafted.  I don't know much about artisan quality jewelry (I am learning though.). But I think this may qualify.

"Cool, Joe Cool."

May 24th 2014 - Amateur Archeology - SEVEN RING DAY!!!

May 24th 2014 - Amateur Archeology - SEVEN RING DAY!!!
My Seven Ring Day!

I love Urban Treasure Hunting!  Ever since I was a kid, I was always looking for that lost "something" in my neighborhood that would bring me Fortune and Glory!

Not to brag, but I am a good "FINDER!"

I have been very lucky so far in that I can say I have never had a day where I have not found something.  I have never been "skunked."  Usually that's means a handful of change, but sometimes it is something cool.  Even better, sometimes it is something valuable.  I never cease to be amazed at what comes out of the ground.

To this day, Kristine is wearing my "best" find.  I love that!

And then sometimes all of the planets align and everything comes together and I have one of the "best" days.  Yesterday was one of those days.

I have been working a secret location that is somewhere west of Redwood Road in Salt Lake City Utah.  I have found a lot of items at this location  and it just keeps giving.  Yesterday was the most exceptional day so far.

To start off the day, I had company.  As I was digging my first ring of the day I felt someone touch my back.  That's usually not a good sign.  Some people consider what I do "sketchy."  I have yet to have a run in with an angry person, or even worse one of Salt Lake's finest, but it could happen.  (One time I was working a park and I am pretty sure someone must have called me in.   A police car pulled up to a curb and watched me for a half hour or so.  I am sure that when they realized I wasn't the public nuisance that they were informed of, they laughed and drove away.)  Anyway, I turned around to face who was interested in what I was doing and found a black and white cattle dog with her paw on my back!

Anyone who knows me knows that I love dogs, and today there were two of them!  A male and a  female cattle dog brought to the area by a group of kids who were playing baseball.  For whatever reason, these two dogs picked me to be their best friend for the day.  I would walk and detect and they would both walk behind me one on each side just behind the swing of my coil.  When I stopped to dig they would lay down and wait to be petted, or they would lovingly jump on me and lick my face.  It may not sound like fun to some of you, but to me  it was bliss!   Any day I have company is great. Any day where I have two dogs for company is fantastic!  As I would dig they would help me dig (Dogs love to dig!).  If they thought  I wasn't paying enough attention to them they would lay over the hole and roll over to get their belly rubbed.  As I said, bliss!

The rain  we had earlier that day made the ground perfect to dig.  One thing that I have noticed is that when the ground is wet I seem to find deeper targets.  I also seem to find more.  I am not sure if there is a scientific explanation for this, but because of it I will always be out metal detecting after a rain storm.

In the three hours that I detected I found seven rings.  None of them are "valuable" but to find seven in that time frame and not be on a beach  is unheard of.  It is definitely a personal record for me!  They may not be valuable but I am in a ring finder's competition.  This will definitely bring my ring count up!

One draw back is that I found  one of Sauron's Rings of Power.  From past experience, I have found that these are nothing but trouble despite the fact that you can turn invisible.  Looks like it is another trip to Mordor for me.  Sigh.......
"One Ring To Rule Them All.  I hate those trips to Mordor...

Side Note:  I have had the Fisher F75 Metal Detector  for about five months and every time I take it out I like it more and more.  Mom and Dad are using  the Fisher F2's  they got for Christmas to great effect.  No doubt about it, Fisher makes a great machine!

My Trusty Sidearm
